Malawi’s highest-rated chess player, Joseph Mwale, stumbled at the Zone 4:3 Championship in Mozambique after finishing 12th out of 24 participants over the weekend.
The South Africa-based Malawian, who is a candidate master, finished with five points whereas champion Fide Master, Catalino Domingos, from Angola, amassed 6.5 points.
Mwale said the tournament helped him to prepare for the Batumi Olympiad set for September in Georgia, Europe.
“I had a bad start but I tried to push myself up to finish the last games well and it happened. I hope for a great start next time. Otherwise, I thank all those that supported me, including Chess Association of Malawi’s (Chessam) officials,” Mwale said.
Chessam President, Kezzie Msukwa, said the result was not bad for Mwale, and encouraged other chess players to participate in such tournaments ahead of the Olympiad.
